Before we explore how to use camera raw files and Photoshop, it is first necessary to learn what both of these terms mean as explained is this . Photoshop is a software program that allows you to modify and create images on your computer. A camera raw file is a type of digital picture file, similar to the common jpeg file, but with some major differences.

Essentially, a jpeg file takes the image seen through the viewfinder of your digital camera, squishes it and modifies it so it will take up less memory. Some parts of your image, especially ‘shadow’ and ‘highlight details’, are lost forever. A raw camera file stores all the data for the image so you have exactly what your camera saw. The file size is about twice as large as a jpeg but is great for high resolution work.

Raw files are manipulated through Photoshop CS (Creative Suite). CS2, 3, and 4 all support camera raw files. However, you are not initially using Photoshop, but rather a part of its Creative Suite – Adobe Bridge. Adobe Bridge is a program that allows you to store and organize your images. Open Adobe Bridge by opening Photoshop and clicking on the Adobe Bridge shortcut button that appears on your default screen.

Use Adobe Bridge to navigate to the folder in which you have stored your raw files. You should see rows of thumbnails. Right-click on the image you wish to manipulate and a fly-out menu will appear. Your best bet is to select open in camera raw. Adobe Bridge will automatically open your selected file in the Camera-Raw plug-in.

When you open a Camera-Raw plug-in window there are five sections you will have to navigate. They are:-
Tools
Image preview
Workflow options
Histogram
Settings panels
Options one through four essentially allow you to view your image and workspace in different ways. However, it is likely that you will spend most of your time using the settings panel.

The settings panel allows you to adjust the following:-

lets you adjust the balance of light in your photo. Select from a preset list of lighting option and then adjust the tint (warm to cool) or temperature (green to purple).

changes the amount of light exposed in your photo. Adjust the brightness, contrast, and saturation.

is a more advanced function that allows you to correct for quirks your camera may have.

allows you to make your photo appear crisper.

another advanced function that is not applicable for beginner use.

Once you have played with and adjusted your image to your liking, there are four options available to you:-
Open – This saves your changes and opens your raw file in Photoshop CS2 for further manipulation.
Save – This also saves your changes, but in a new file while simultaneously saving your original file.
Done – This saves your changes to the original file.
Cancel – This deletes any changes you made to your original file.

For starters, it is best to save your raw file as a camera raw database. This keeps your settings together with your original image, even if you rename the file. It works best for files you want to keep on your computer only.

In the beginning, using a raw file over a jpeg may seem complicated and unnecessary. But after you become more familiar with the workings of Photoshop CS2 you will find it better to work with more versatile image files.

Learning Methods of Adobe Photoshop Video Training Software

So what are the mechanics of this “through the lens” shot to achieve the ghosting effect? 1. Stabilize the camera – using a tripod is best, a stable surface is a second option or, a steady hand as a last resort; 2. Set number of multiple exposures you require for the frame to (N) – usually 1 to 9; 3. For the roll of film in your SLR, determine the film speed (S); 4. Reset the camera film speed (Yes, you can override the setting) to (N S) or, if not an exact match, set it to the absolute closest speed ((N S) adjustment); 5. Take your picture, depressing the shutter button for a total count equalling the number of camera exposures you set in step “2″.

you must understand that this only works for 8 bit per channel images – those that can be put into layers but it could function also on 16 bit per channel pictures with Optipix plug-in that allows direct selection of dark or light edges. If you are not sure about which edge halo to use, there are general rules regarding such: 1. On light background tones, light edges don’t show up well and vice versa on dark ones. 2. The halo should lie on the background, not on the foreground. This technique helps the feature stand out without having to change its brightness values. Sometimes the following rules are in conflict. It is necessary, then, to try several combinations to decide which is best. You can try both edges, light edges only, dark edges only. You can experiment since different regions of your image may call for different answers.

Now you may want to add a Brightness/Contrast layer. This will help get rid of any extra grain or lines that are unwanted. I used a very subtle Brightness/Contrast layer, because I didnt want it to get too bright or too contrasted. So just experiment with it until you find a nice amount. Now that we have added our Brightness/Contrast, we are ready to start making it a brush. So first I want you to desaturate it. After desaturating our fractal we want to invert it. So invert your fractal. Now that we have inverted we are going to go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast. 1. Every fractal is different and will require different settings. 2. I want you to experiment so your learning and not just copying down numbers. Now that we added the Brightness/Contrast we are almost done with making our brush! All we have to do now is hit Ctrl – A and go to Edit > Define Brush Preset. Name the brush what ever you want, and try it out!

Did you know that Photoshop is color blind? When I say “color blind”, I don’t mean it has a little trouble distinguishing between certain shades of green and purple. I mean it’s completely and totally blind when it comes to color. All Photoshop sees is black and white. Well, black, white, and a lot of shades of gray in between, but that’s it. The world’s most powerful image editor, an industry standard among photographers, designers, and virtually all creative professionals, capable of producing millions, even billions of colors has no idea what color is.

A very frequent question a photoshopist asks is why does his image which was shown in photoshop does not look similar to the saved image. The answer to this question is simple because when you click on save as an type in the file name you never bother to view the box which comes after it which is known as jpeg options ( note if you are saving the file in jpeg format ) drag the slider to last till the max. The format option select progressive and click on scans drop down box and select 5 to improve the image more selct the connection speed of the internet ( note for you it will work fast but for other with not high end internet connection will work slow so keep it at 56.6kbps ) or if you only want quality click 2mbps or anything lesser this will increase the image quality very much for better results change the uimage format from jpeg to png or gif they are better

If you try to learn Photoshop yourself, a trial and error method of learning will allow you to become pretty good at a few fundamental techniques. But you’ll never begin to imagine the unlimited potential of Photoshop CS2 until you sign up for Photoshop training. If you deal with images or graphics of any type in your work or in your favorite hobby, Photoshop training can help you reach your full potential. Adobe says that Photoshop CS3 Extended is ideal for film and video professionals, professionals in the manufacturing industry, medical professionals, architects and engineers, and scientific researchers. Photoshop CS3 lets professionals render 3D images and incorporate them in 2D composites. When CS2 came out, professional and novices alike were thrilled with the new Font Preview capability. And if you’re considering a career as a graphic designer or visual effects artist, Photoshop training is one of the best ways to achieve your career goals.

Pictures are made up of many things, editing requires knowledge of all 3: 1) Contrasts adjustments (the highlights and the shadows) 2) Neutral tones balance (color cast on grey) 3) Increasing or decreasing the saturation The work flow of the photographic post production can be performed with many adjustment tools as: Brightness/contrast – Color Balance – Hue/Saturation, or Levels – Hue/Saturation, or Auto-Adjustments – Sponge. This tutorial is very brief and introduces a new method to decrease color cast on neutral tones. The picture has a really intense orange color cast. I took this picture of Christopher Columbus’ statue along the “lower pavement” in Funchal (Madeira Island). No need to be a colorimetric expert to understand that, the light effect due to the night orange lights is to much. The goal is to decrease color cast, of course, without changing the “meaning” of the picture.First of all we duplicate the background layer. Then we apply Filter>Blur>Average, that will transform the picture’s layer into a colored “stain” by the average pixels’ color. Then we have to invert (ctrl+i) the obtained color in order to see the opposite color. Now we change blending mode to Color (read also Blending modes tutorial) and decrease master opacity until we obtain our goal. And that’s all! Photoshop For Newbie Tips

Learning Adobe Photoshop to Master All Adobe Photoshop Widest Applications

July 2nd, 2011

Many of us may wonder learning adobe Photoshop is an engineering mathematics in itself. All of us have software called Adobe Photoshop installed in out programs menu. We never turn back to open it. Through all these years that wonderful piece of software is rarely used or not used at all. It can lead to like an Alice to Wonderland! If you just spent some time exploring it. Photoshop has a wide variety of graphic tools available. There are many softwares that are commercially available like Ability Photopaint, Corel painter, Corel photo-paint, Graphic converter, Photo Mechanic, TV paint and many versions. Each of the Photoshop version comes with various applications and options that can be accessed from the help menus of each version.

Illusion of a particular movement can be created by making still pictures move. Well, this is cartoons all about. Remember the basic cartoon making skills. We create a series of images that have slight variations and we put those pictures it the form of a picture. When we flip through the pictures the drawing gives the appearance of a moving action. Well the same is the concept of animation, just playing a little trick with out vision. Photoshop is a very effective tool for digital animation that works on the same concept. Photo retouch, is a technological aspect in Photoshop where in the aura of the purple color can be removed from your image. Say for instance at times when there is a voltage fluctuation, you try moving your hands in the air and watch it, you will see an aura of your hands due to the varied wavelength of the light. So there are instances when due to undesired light exposure you land up having purple fringes in your photograph, which can be effectively edited with the retouch option.

There is special software called Photoshop plastic surgery that our doctor uses to demonstrate when you are in for a cosmetic surgery of your nose or whatever organ. You can change seasonal effects from summer to winter. Business card templates can be effectively created using Adobe Photoshop. All you have to do is chose from a list of stylish graphics the image for your business card, then click on the insert option, this opens and edit text box, where you insert the text. There after you change the font size and font color for the text you have entered for your business care and the business card is ready for printing. You can save them as a digital image and use it as e-business cards.

As any art prefers, so does Adobe Photoshop require some time for learning. Adobe Photoshop has widest applications. It is not necessary that we need to master all. We can use it for our needs instantly with little time spent on the study of this wonderful software! Photoshop For Newbie Tips

Take Better Picture In Five Steps

April 26th, 2011

Posted by Ron Mulland in photography | Comments Off

1. P is not for professional. So you pick up your camera, switch the mode dial to P, or if you are really getting fancy perhaps even shutter speed or aperture priority. But how do you go shooting in manual mode? Are you on top of all the decisions you are faced with? Leaving your camera on manual for a while may feel awkward at first but after a short period you will gain a much better understanding of aperture, shutter speed and ISO and how the three correlate to determine exposure. After you are comfortable shooting in manual there will be situations in which you still shoot aperture or shutter priority however you will be better informed to select the right mode for the situation and to evaluate the decisions you are putting into your cameras hands.

2. The lower your ISO the cleaner your images. Digital photographs contain artifacts known as “Noise”. The higher you set your ISO the more noise your images will exhibit. Thus always use the lowest ISO you can, just don’t forget to be mindful of your aperture and shutter speed and make sure they are correct for the situation at hand.

3. Understand shutter speeds and how to use them to your benefit. The general rule for hand held photography in order to maintain sharp images free of camera shake is that you should use a shutter speed no slower that 1/focal length. Fop example lets say you are shooting with a 50mm lens, the slowest shutter speed recommended for sharp hand help photos would be 1/50th sec, if you were to use a 250mm lens the slowest recommended hand held shutter speed would be 1/250th sec. There are of course exceptions to this rule, you may be able to get away with slower shutter speeds if using a flash. Another option is to use a tripod which is a great idea in general as it leads to more purposeful and thought out images.

4. Try shooting portraits with a large aperture, the larger the aperture, the smaller the number. By using a large aperture, say f2.8 for example you will achieve a shallow depth of field, thus eliminate distracting backgrounds, better leading the viewers eye to the subject in focus.

5. Fill flash, your best friend on a sunny day. If photographing people outdoors in harsh sunlight the common issue that leads to amateur looking pictures is strong shadows beneath the brow, this renders eyes as dark and detail-less voids. Sure you could take your subject into the shade but this is not always possible. In such a situation on camera flash set to approx 1 stop below ambient will fill in the shadows whilst avoiding both harsh shadows and the flat on camera flash look.

It is worth taking the time to get your head around a few simple concepts, in doing so your photography and your ability to produce good images under a variety of conditions will increase beyond what you thought possible.

Taking Professional Looking Pictures Using Your Digital Camera

December 10th, 2010

Posted by Ben R. Jonas in photography | Comments Off

There are people who seem to be able to take great photos every single time, yet there are others who are struggling with most of their photos, no matter what. While there is some truth to the fact that some people are just born with it, this is a craft that can be learned, no matter which type of camera you have, be it an old 35mm or an inexpensive digital camera.

What you need to do is simply learn the basics. The rest is merely practice, practice, practice. So don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you can’t learn it because you don’t have the ‘something’, because it’s not true. Yes, some people have talent, and for them it’s much easier to learn it, however unless you really want to work as a professional photographer, you don’t need to learn to be a pro at it. Being good at it is all you need.

Using the rule of thirds is maybe one of the most basic and most crucial steps to learn digital photography. Try to imagine the viewfinder as divided by 9 equal boxes. Then imagine the dividing line. This is where the best parts of your image will be located.

Let’s say you want to take a picture of a tree trunk. Simply place it on the vertical – or horizontal – dividing line in your viewfinder and shoot the picture.

When you want to take portraits, there is a very useful way of going about it, by using narrow depth of field. When you use this setting, you ensure that the narrower the depth becomes, the more the person comes forward and the more the background fades away. This will easily make the person stand out in the picture for the profile shot.

When it comes to taking shots of landscapes, landscape photography is what you want here. Here the whole scene becomes the subject of your shot so you have to work a bit differently this time.

You need to have the whole scene in focus as opposed to having a focal point and you need to shoot this time at a wider perspective so that you can take in as much as you can from the actual scenery or landscape.

These are just some of the basic tips and tricks to take great shots. Of course, there are many more, but the most important thing that you have to learn from this is that practice is really what makes you great in photography. What you need to do is have your camera always with you and take pictures of anyone and anything that you can, without invading anyone’s private space.

Thin digital cameras are quite ‘in’ this Christmas. A disposable digital camera is also great to give as present, since it’s cheap and very well liked at the moment.

Learning Photoshop Basics For Free

June 16th, 2010

Posted by admin in learn photoshop | Comments Off

Adobe Photoshop, called simply Photoshop by most, is a leading graphics editor developed by Adobe Systems. It is used to create and manipulate images, both for personal and commercial use. Photoshop can be used in multiple operating systems, including Microsoft, Macintosh and Linux. Since 1988, Photoshop has evolved from containing basic editing tools to the now more advanced functions, including the warp tool and the grain reduction filter for photos taken in low light. Because of this, there is a need to learn the basics and constantly re-learn additional features of the software; hence, the continuously increasing number of free Photoshop tutorials available.

The Adobe Photoshop program itself offers tutorials. First, check out the manual. This contains explanations on the basic tools of the software. The program also comes with ReadMe and ReadMe First! files that also contains helpful information. When you open Adobe Photoshop, you can also go to Photoshop Help under the “Help” tab. If you are using Windows, the shortcut would be to click F1. You can then choose from a set of basic Photoshop topics, such as making color adjustments, drawing, applying filters, and using layers.

Free Photoshop Tutorials also abound on the Internet. The advantages of using the Internet to look for free tutorials are that these resources are more updated that those found in books or those built-in with the program. The Internet also provides almost unlimited information for various topics and useful tips from other users like you. Also, you can access these tutorials at your own time in the convenience of your home.

The most trusted source of free Photoshop information is the Adobe Website, which can be seen at http://www.adobe.com. Adobe Online offers free tutorials, how-to guides, interactive online courses and online seminars. Adobe Online also allows registered users access to Photoshop Knowledgebase, which contains answers to technical questions. Adobe also offers customer service, which can vary depending on your location.

You can also join several online Photoshop forums. These allow Photoshop users to interact with one another and answer each other’s questions. Adobe also has an online forum for its products, including Photoshop. Aside from this, there are other forums on Photoshop and other similar software that you can join.

If you still want more information, you can also search the Internet for other sources. Using a search engine, you can find numerous websites offering free Photoshop tutorials. Free Photoshop tutorials are available in multiple formats, including text, audio, video, or combinations of these. Depending on your availability, tutorials may also be conducted in real-time or may be accessed on-demand.

Some websites offer a list of free online tutorials from different sources, such as http://www.tutorialkit.com and http://www.photoshopsupport.com. Other sites offer free tutorials that can be accessed on their webpages, while some websites send the tutorials directly to your e-mail. Some websites also offer online tutorial and training courses, which you can try out for free for a set trial period. You can also avail of tutorial courses using chats and call or video conferencing, which can be conducted one-on-one or with a group. These live tutorials are more interactive, allowing you to ask questions during the process and provide feedback to the other users.

Of course, there are also disadvantages to searching for free Photoshop tutorials online is that you cannot always be assured of the quality of the tutorials. Majority of these tutorials are not certified or supported by Adobe Systems. Also, some websites offering free Photoshop tutorials advertise that their tutorials are free when, in fact, they aren’t. Users looking for free Photoshop tutorials should be on the lookout for these sites and should proceed with caution.
