Naturally there are an infinite range of effects and post-processing techniques you can apply to your 3D visualisation images and every artist/designer has their own methods of creating these. This list has been limited to 5 and selected to give a range of effects that I personally use more frequently and that are reasonably compatible with each other.
Before adding any effects to the 3D image, i recommend that you make a duplicate of the original image. This lets you alter and add effects to the image but you can always relate back to the original photo, this is also called a ‘non-destructive’ image. The best ways to create a ‘non-destructive’ image is to duplicate the original image by clicking ‘Ctrl + J’ and you can also use adjustment layers, either option works both ways.
Ok, now on to the effects:
1. Increased contrast. For me the simplest way to achieve this is using levels (‘Ctrl + L’ or ‘Cmd + L’ on a Mac). Using the black, grey and white pointers click and drag these around to alter the percentage of the image in each tonal range (black pointer for shadows, grey pointer for mid tones and the white pointer for highlights). A good all round setting that I have found is to pull both the black and white pointers in to the inside edge of the numerical value box below each respective pointer; The numerical value below the black pointer should be around 30 and the numerical number under the white pointer around 223. This is a quick way to add punch to your 3D visualisation images.
2. Colour Balance. To see the colour balance options click Ctrl + B.If you scroll to the bottom of the option box there are three radio buttons, by adjusting these you are able to chose which tonal range to change – Shadows – Mid Tone – Highlights. Click on each of these to either increase or decrease the balance of the colour.
3. Adding a vignette. Navigate to Filter – Distortion – Lens Correction. A new dialogue box appears, quite simply click and drag the Vignette slider until you are happy. Sliding to the right creates a bright vignette, sliding to the left creates a subtle shadow effect around the frame of your image, useful for drawing the viewer into the focal point of your image.
4. Adding Depth. This effect will give depth to the image and draw focus to a certain area of the 3D image. To do this click on ‘channels palette’ and select new ‘channel’. Remember to check that you have your RGB channel is visible, this will allow you to see what your doing. Use the gradient fill tool to add a preferred gradient, redial/reflective. You need to right click on the paint bucket to toggle it on or off to enable this effect. Now click Filter – Blur – Lens Blur, select Alpha 1 from the drop down box. You may have to click the Invert check box if the area you want to work on is blurred. By adjusting the Radius & Blur Focal Distance sliders to get the outcome you were looking for.
5. High Dynamic Range – HDR. To create an illusion of HDR to your 3D image these steps work. To start make a duplicate of the original image, rename it ‘Black & White’ and make this layer greyscale by pressing Ctrl – Shift- U. This has to be inverted by pressing Ctrl – I and set the blending technique to Overlay. Go to Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur. Increase the amount until you are happy with the slight glow at the edges of the image. If you go back to the original image, duplicate it again and name it Linear Light. This has to be dragged to the top of your layer stack and the technique has to be changed to Linear Light, if you set the opacity between 10-40%, to whichever looks best.
As with any creative image production process, the final outcome differs drastically from project to project. Various factors come into play; is the project a personal piece created for fun, a commercial piece with strict brief guidelines, is the final output for print or screen based media, and numerous other deliverables that will determine a specific style treatment or approach to your work. The above effects and techniques allow you to experiment and add a little more impact and post-processing punch to your 3D Visualisation images.
