Using Photo Preservation to Stop Time

July 10th, 2010

Photo preservation can be a complex process that requires lots of patience, knowledge, and care. When people handle their pictures and negatives, they do many things, unintentionally, that are very harmful to them, and most do not even know they are damaging their photos. Besides sticking fingers all over the pictures, there is more than fingerprints that can slowly destroy your paper memories. Pictures are actually made of gelatin and tiny silver particles. This makes them susceptible to bug infestation, mold, mildew, and humidity.

Unfortunately, many things that are made for use with pictures are the very things that hasten their disintegration. Many picture boards, cardboards, and most glue contain an acid that slowly eats away at the pictures. Even the chemicals that are used to develop the film from negatives are to blame for the eventual demise of these photographs.

Photo Preservation: Safe Handling

The most common problem that causes photographs to be lost is one that is simple to remedy: Lack of Identification. Who in the next generation would keep pictures around full of people and places they know nothing about? The first tip for preserving pictures is when you do write identifiers on them, use India ink or a carbon ink pen. Many other regular pens contain chemicals that will eventually ruin the photo. Dont use oily erasers, and never write on the front of the picture, with the exception of special paints designed to do so. Most people are commonly aware that sunlight will ruin photographs, so be careful where you place your pictures in their frames.

Never use rubber cement to adhere photographs to anything. The acids in rubber cement will ruin the picture quickly, cracking the emulsion and paper backing. Rubber cement contains sulfur, which reacts with the silver that sentences pictures to certain death! Do not use the photo albums that have the self-adhesive pages covered by clear plastic film. The glue, again here too, is acidic. Never display your pictures in vinyl sleeves. The sleeves are made out of a certain type of plastic that will cause both color and black and white photos to fade.

Photo Preservation: Safe Storage:

Art supply stores and photo shops are excellent places to find photo-friendly supplies for your pictures. Many times, pictures that you want to keep in storage are done so by putting them in any old bag or a box. There are boxes specifically designed for storage, but be careful; to keep photographs safe for many years, look for containers that are labeled as safe for archival storage.

Also, keeping them in metal filing cabinets is ok too, or at least better than in a cardboard or wooden box. Once you have specifically-designed boxes for the pictures, be sure to keep them in a cool, relatively dry place. Finally, never keep your photos, no matter what kind of storage box they are in, on floors or in damp basements.

Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX #34 – Solution to Egg and Photo Album

Nothing important in this section. Just going to the Library to find the solution to the Wind Fish’s Egg (which can only be seen if you possess the Magnifying Lens), and visiting the Photo Shop to look at the 12 pictures collected. Oh, and there is another variant of Photo 1. Just keep saying “No.” and it will be different. LOL I also headed to the Color Dungeon to switch out Tunics (snipped it out to prevent boredom.) Once again: nothing special in this part.

Steps on Fine Tuning the Images on Digital Photo Printing

June 25th, 2010

Posted by admin in photo shop | Comments Off

If you are contemplating to print your pictures using digital photo printing, it is important to know the few basic steps on digital printing in order to achieve the best results. When compared with traditional photo processing, the digital photo printing uses the similar processes. However, the advantage you have is, you can edit and review your photographs, to suit your liking, before sending it to digital printing. There are five steps on digital printing one must know.

1. Scan Your Photo If Permits.

This step is applicable to people who do not have a digital camera or who do not have soft copies on a CD ROM. Preferably use a flat-bed scanner (which is available in the market) which will prevent warping of your pictures. The advantage of a scanner is the software that come along with this allows you to easily store your scanned images to your computer.

2. Review the Picture in a Photo editor.

It is a always prudent to review your images before you dispatch them for digital photo printing. In essence, it will give you a opportunity to rectify any shortcomings in the photos, before sending. For example, you may have to rotate the picture, as images scanned may be at the right orientation. These types of flaws can easily be overcome using the photo editing software such as photo shop. Using appropriate tool in the software, you can turn the picture to the correct position.

3.

Red Eye Removal
The red eye phenomenon is very common in photography when you take pictures using flash mode. Even in digital photography, this problem persists. If red eye effect is present, it is important to adjust it using software. Most editing software has the facility to remove the red-eye effect easily. Once you do the red eye correction, do not forget to save the image.

4. Adjusting Color Corrections

You may notice that some photos may not be good due to over or under exposure resulting in unnatural skin tones etc. In such situations, you have to do the appropriate correction using edit software before dispatching for digital printing . For example, necessary adjustments to the color or the hue or the saturation have to be done. The right way to do is, open the picture stored in the computer utilizing the edit software and use the appropriate tool to change these settings. You can experiment with various settings until you achieve the best image.

5. Define the Image Quality

Finally, to get the best results, one should have the photos under the right image quality format or file format. This will enable you to get the right resolution and fine photos with digital photo printing. This can be easily be accomplished through storing the the image files under .jpg or .gif extension format. The software you use for this purpose, will prompt by asking under which format you have to print the images. Always select the higher value and save the pictures.

If you follow the above steps, you are certain to have fine looking images that will be ideal for digital printing. This explains that the digital photo printing is more flexible and give you better results when compared to traditional printing. In essence, you will know the exact outcome beforehand resulting in saving money and time.

Interesting Ways to Display your Favorite Photos

June 22nd, 2010

Photos of family and friends add warmth and personality to our homes. The more public the photo display, the more creative you need to be to exhibit your treasures.

Every home has some wall space that can be converted into an attractive photo display. Most people view their photos as priceless memories, so why not display them as works of art…create a gallery to show case your family and friends.

-Decide on what pictures you want to display. The pictures need to be close up and clear otherwise the gallery will not be sharp. -Create a theme – family vacation or a special holiday. You can update your pictures on a yearly basis…have a photo gallery party each year.

-Mixing frames of different styles and sizes can be fun, but it does take some planning. Find a consistent theme of color or type of wood to balance out the different shapes and styles…the photos need to take center stage, not the frames.

-Lay the framed photos on a tabletop or the floor and rearrange until you find a workable arrangement. Start with the largest pictures first and surround them with smaller photos.

-Find a friend or family member to help when measuring and preparing to mount on the wall. Have your leveler ready to be sure that a picture that looks straight actually is straight.

Other ideas:

Older photographs add character to your home. If you have a favorite old photo that’s fading, or has been damaged or crinkled through the years, take it to a photo shop to have it restored and reprinted. You might even be able to do this yourself at home with photo imaging software. You might want to consider adding a special effect, enlarging or cropping the photo differently to add a new perspective to a familiar photo.

Great places to display your favorite photos on tabletops, desktops, bookshelves, and your family entertainment wall unit. I received a gift of an oak wood dressing screen that contained space for nine large 8×10 photos…what a wonderful display for my children’s pictures.

Transfer a favorite photo onto a pillowcase or wall hanging. Photo collages of friends or family members make great placemats. Simply arrange and laminate.

Individual laminated photos can be affixed to magnets to put on the refrigerator and other metal surfaces in your home.

For the special occasion, create a photo quilt. Photos can be transferred onto fabric easily. The quilt will need to be hand washed, but what a treasure to give someone as a gift.

Finally, for all those special pictures that don’t make the home display, create your own scrapbook and add your stories around the photos.
