Making The Cost Of Logo Design Worth It

August 31st, 2010

One way to make sure that you get to keep your company’s identity is by being aware of the different ways that you can protect its logo design copyright. By doing so, you’re not only making your company stand out, you also get to exercise your company’s God given right to have something that is completely exclusive.

This is why it is important for everybody to find out the right way on how to ensure that they are getting their money’s worth when it comes to the cost of logo design.

There are some DIY logo design websites who would charge people for as low as $5 for a logo although some of them might charge way more than that. There are some DIY websites though that have the ability to create unique logos. However, the number of those who can’t generate a logo that can be approved by the US patent office definitely outnumbers them.

This is where making use of the websites that most companies trust becomes a good thing. The reason behind this is the fact that the only way to tell if a DIY website is good is by actually trying it out. However, always remember that results may vary and your creativity level greatly affects how your logo will come out.

In order to fully protect your logo design copyright, you should be aware of a few mistakes that other people made which made them lose their right over their logo. One thing that you have to remember that common signs, like the Latin cross cannot be copyrighted. They can be used by anybody in any way that they please. Taglines are also not covered if the only things that are changed about them are the font style and size.

On The Road – Keep Your Images Safe

August 31st, 2010

One of the hardest things to deal with in the digital age is what to do with your images when you are on the road for a long time. You have saved your vacation time, your hard earned money and arranged a 4 week trip to – oh, I don’t know, let us say India.

Thus for 4 weeks you will be struck dumb from dawn until dusk with a myriad of sights, sounds and smells (especially those!) that are so far outside your normal life experience that you may well find yourself almost rendered inert by sensory overload. As a photographer, your camera will be in your hand many times a day and will record all that you stand witness to as you journey through this new part of the world.

Of course you are shooting in RAW; why risk loosing image information by in-camera processing? Every time your camera makes a JPEG, it throws away a big chunk of the sensor data and applies very broad-brush settings which will significantly limit your post processing options back home. The downside of RAW is the size of the files. My Nikon D3 for example will save 5,800 basic JPEG files on a 16Gb card – but only 640 RAW files in the same amount of memory.

This means that you are probably going to need to empty a 16Gb card every 2 or 3 days most of the time, and potentially daily in some circumstances. On a 4 week trip this equates to say 30 days, 16Gb every 2 days = 240Gb of storage requirement. Add a safety margin and 300Gb looks more sensible. If you are a video shooter as well, I would suggest doubling that!

300Gb is bigger than most Hard Drives found in a laptop so whilst you may take a laptop for editing or other tasks whilst travelling, that alone will not solve your storage needs on the road for a trip like our example.

My personal solution is to pack an Adata Sport A10 external HDD that connects to my Mac Book Pro via USB (Firewire would be faster but is not an option, sadly). I use the 640Gb version although a 500 and a 320 are available. The Adata Sport is a US Mil Spec tested rugged drive that has passed transit drop tests, liquid splashing tests and so on. It is covered with soft rubber which also makes handling it a non-slip operation.

The Adata Sport has apparently been tested to survive full immersion in water to a depth of 1.2 metres for 30 minutes but I really don’t suggest testing that claim! However, it is a reasonable bet that it is equipped to handle the rigours of the average long trip in dark corners of the world.

I also take a stack of blank DVD’s with me and burn back ups to those as well when in a quiet hotel room or other undisturbed location. (CD’s are no use for this – their data capacity is far to small) The DVD’s can also be burned twice and you can keep one set in a different bag from the drive and mail one home when convenient if the trip is a very long one.
